5 Tips to Get the Keys to Your Dream Home

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

Ready to purchase your dream home? When looking, here are 5 tips for ensuring you find the perfect home for you and your family.

  1. Make a list of Key Features

  2. Determine your ideal Neighborhood/Surrounding Area

  3. Amount of Space

  4. Consider the Property

  5. Create a Budget to Determine the Spending Range

Key Features

Make a list of key features you are looking for in a dream home. Whether it is 5 bedrooms, a master suite, walk-in closets, or a pool, having a list of what you want will help your realtor narrow down the search to ensure you are only looking at houses with elements you want. In some cases, key features may be added after buying, such as a pool. Key features that you can add later should be considered in the budget before purchasing the home.

The Neighborhood/Surrounding Area

Do you want to live somewhere quiet and relaxed or somewhere more vibrant and busy? Everyone had different preferences, and the area you choose to reside should reflect your preferences. If you want to be near running trails or a grocery store, you should communicate those wants with your realtor. When visiting homes, take time to walk around the neighborhood or drive through the area to see if it's a right fit for you.

Amount of Space

Space needs depend on your preferences and the amount of people living in a home. If you have kids that need space to play, you may want more space than a retiring couple. Do you need an office, a workout room? Take into consideration the needs of the residents of the home when determining the minimum amount of space you need and the maximum amount of space you want.

The Property

The land that the home sits on and the home itself should reflect your dream home or the potential of your dream home. If you want an acerage, your realtor will stay away from small lots. Property maintance is an important factor in the property, as well. If you have a large yard, garden, and landscaping, will you maintain that? Or will you need to hire someone to do so? On the otherhand, if the property is too small and your children can't run around or the yard doesn't have mature trees and you want a shady backyard, you could find yourself dissapointed. Take these factors into consdieration before purchasing a home.

The Cost

Always go into the home buying process with a budget. This will help you and your realtor narrow down your options and ensure that you feel comfortable with the buying process. You can talk to a loan agent before starting the buying process to see what types of loans are available for you.
